I agree with this, but where the movies are an AU, I figured it was an AU where L was Japanese and more conventionally attractive and adapted to societal norms because it worked better for the story being told.
Canonically, L is a generally unattractive grey-skinned bug-eyed mostly white man (I don’t mean to imply that his being white and his being unattractive are related in case it is read that way) who no one would feel comfortable around in real life, and while I did love how this movie mixed it up, I still want to see a more accurate “official” live-action L.

There were actually a few shout outs to Death Note in my adaptions of the Pokemon characters in what used to be my main story for them.
No matter how much time passes, I’m always just utterly in awe of L as a character.
His entire design is fucking brilliant. Everything about him is just… It’s mind-boggling.
I love how he’s clearly completely fucked up and suffers all kinds of psychological damage and trauma, but the authors DON’T go into that, DON’T make him a wangsty, sympathetic character, don’t do more than HINT at it. It’s so effective. It works so well. L’s entire character itself is a lie to the fanbase.
I want to know everything about him. What I wouldn’t give to read more of Mello’s narratives… Gah. Just like the children of Wammy’s House, the closer I get to understanding L, the further away he becomes. By his very design, intentionally, L is not meant to be understood.
And that applies for so many of the characters as well, like Light, Mello, and Near. Even Misora and Matsuda and other minor characters.
I just absolutely adore L. His character is tragic, but at the same time, it isn’t, and can’t be summed up in such petty terms.
I just really
really love L.
